March 16, 2008R5 Presents Holy Fuck, A Place to Bury Strangers, Gildon Works
Johnny Brenda’s, Thursday March 20, 2008

Holy Fuck
No computers, midi, drum machines, electronics. All live, experimental, improv with a bunch of dudes wigging out on toy keyboards and the 35 mm film synchronizer – a film editing device which has never before been used as an instrument. An even goofier and more garishly colorful Out Hud, Holy Fuck blasts out opulent streams of saturated melody, clouds of glitter and confetti, nitrous-boosted dance dynamics.
A Place to Bury Strangers
Setting tinnitus-inducing noise-pop against a tension-wracked Joy Division-meets-Ministry backdrop, the debut LP from Brooklyn-based trio A Place to Bury Strangers drenches lovesick indie pop in sheets of deafening static and distortion. Plenty of bands may have tapped the trebly, ecstatic side of shoegaze in recent years, but none have imbued it with this band’s frustrated aggression or lacerating, industrial feedback. And don’t forget about that now infamous CMJ story where the police shutting down the show allowed them to play one more because “This band is sick”
Gildon Works
Ethereal, propulsive, Gildon Works have been fine tuning their moody, reverb drenched sounds for some time. Arrive early and discover another great Philly band.
